As part of its mission to preserve, promote and provide learning experiences in culture, heritage, and the arts, Iredell Museums presents �Leroy Plyler�s Marvelous Musical Machines�.
Leroy Plyler, owner of Plyler�s Mens Clothing & Formal Wear in downtown Statesville, has collected clockwork music boxes of all sizes for almost 50 years. He has an extensive collection of rare and unusual music boxes and mechanical music machines. He is loaning a special group of them to the museum for our holiday exhibit this year. These music boxes are fully functional and some will have Christmas music playing.
Mr. Plyler�s machines are go beyond typical music boxes. These machines range in size from a small tabletop models to larger than an organ. The music boxes operate on clockwork and must be wound to start them. They have a �comb� (metal strips cut to precise notes) that runs against a cylinder with �pins� in it. Each cylinder is set to the certain timing and tuning of a song.
