So...? Did he have Coach Grubb's back? I have no idea if Grubb is a good coach, but Payne worked with him for years did he not? Did he recommend him for the head coach position? Did he support him? All important questions. The problem with school administrators is that they reward the students/athletes that cry and whine. Life is tough. We need to teach our kids to be mentally tough. Mommy and daddy, if the worst thing that ever happens to little Johnny is that the coach fussed at him, then I believe he'll be ok. Get a grip. Let's try to raise our boys to be men, please.

Payne is not coaching the team. According several sources, the JV coach will now coach the varsity team. It sounds like the parents got what they wanted...Grubb gone. 😏

It's obvious from the many posts that the parents wanted Payne as the coach. AD's should not be allowed to coach. They need to be an objective person. Wasn't Grubb Payne's assistant coach for years? Did he not know his own assistant coach well enough to know if he was the man for the job? Maybe Payne liked his ego being stroked. Maybe the parents played on this. It all sounds like it wasn't handled properly. Again, AD's should not coach. There is no way they can be objective. Starting to sound like the crap in the Wilkes County School System.

I guess maybe I am a little old school, but I thought Payne was also. These guys are just lucky that I wasn't their coach. I would cancel the season or play with my JV team before I would succumb to this type of power play on their part. I guess that I am just a little disappointed in Payne and the administration for not getting involved and putting a stop to this. Pandoras box is now open, and the whiners have won. There is not a coach in that school system that should feel safe at this point.

Krider and Payne, you really need to get your arms around this. Ever heard of a successful prison that was ran by the inmates.

Ashe athletics suck.

Too many whimps in the school system. The school system doesn't teach our students to work for what they have. It teaches them to whine to get their way. We have weak principals. It's the only business that I know in this world where you can be the boss and not demonstrate any leadership skills. It is a sad day for high school athletics. Shame on Payne for allowing it. Of course if the cry babies don't get their way with him, he'll be out the door too.

If there is any truth to how the grapevine had this coming down, then it is not only a sad day for Ashe County basketball, but a really sad day for high school athletics in general. All you hear is complaining about all the coaches in Ashe County. No wonder you have difficulty finding the coaches you are looking for because apparently it is impossible to suit the players or their parents. If this was forced on him by kids and their parents threatening to quit like I have heard then this is quite a shame. I have always considered Ashe County High School to be our sister school and have always pulled for them to be successful, but no more. I hope your athletics in general and basketball in particular fall flat on their face, because quite honestly that is what the parents and players deserve.

No we like Coach Wes Rousseau. He is one of the only ones who treats his athletes fairly and with respect. The players like him and that why they play hard for him! The other coaches at the high school could learn a few things from him but they are ALL to stubborn and egotistical to admit there is a problem. So it continues......

Nobody whines more about coaches than Ashe County fans. Dear lord. What's next, fire the soccer coach because he didn't win a fourth straight conference championship?

When will the school step in and say this enough your job is to coach not to belittle them. This is not the first time this has happened he has called players at home and ask them back.

Maybe one of the twelve assistant coaches (bouncers) (player control personnel) (baby sitters) or whatever they are should have stepped in and restrained "mighty mouse"!

I heard what happened, Grubb cannot relate to kids or anyone for a matter when he gets on a kid digs his neails in and wount let go . He cant coach kids up.If the school lets this happen again the AD,Princial,and anyone else involved needs to be fired. Treat the kids like kids and coach and build them up.
