I think he would enjoy it. I am waiting for a return call from a couple guides. Even if it storms ,maybe it would pass and not ruin the whole trip. A 10 yr old boy (or at least mine) will probably sleep most the trip. I think its a 4 1/2 hr trip from what I am getting. But its worth checking. His grandfather years ago went there and loved it. I wish he could have enjoyed the fishing trip with him before he passed. Sounds like you sgtkracka, have had alot of good memories there also. Thanks again everyone for suggestions.

Yeah we lucked up with good weather so checking the weather forecast would be a must. I think I remember it being about a 6 hr trip but i think a ten year old could handle it....we were on a tight schedule so someone who wasn't rushed could make more stops and take some of the stress/boredom out of the trip.

A storm could ruin the whole day at Santee Cooper plus that's a long long trip for anyone let alone a ten year old. Oxford dam's spillway has some good stripers and if it blows up a big storm you're not far from the vehicle.

I've done a lot of fishing and my most memorable trip ever was striper fishing on Santee....I would def recommend it for an experience that a ten year old boy would never forget. My recommendation for a 2 day trip and would be to leave around midnight or a lil earlier the night before with enough time to meet the guide on the dock which will usually be around 6 am. Wear appropriate sunscreen and/ clothing and sunglasses. It will be hot, even in September. When you're done fishing for the day and head back to the dock, there will be people waiting there that will offer to clean your fish. To me its worth the money to not have to do it myself.....but make sure to get them to cut the red part in the center out as this part is too fishy and unpalatable. I tip these ppl generously. I also tip the guide generously. As for lodging, if you rent lodging before 10 am as with most places you will have to pay for an extra day so do this after yours done for the day. My best fishing trip so far.

thanks. He loves to fish and fishes here all the time in Wilkes and Yadkin. Just would love to take him somewhere else for a change. sgtkracka. I probably would make it a 2 day trip. It would make it more enjoyable. I would hate to drive that far and fish for that long and drive back. I will check and see if he is still a guide. Thanks. Anyone else who may have went recently and had a good guide, would love suggestions.

Agreed....September would be a good time for striper fishing at Santee...
Lake Jordan has good crappie fishing. Kerr Scott has so-so crappie fishing. Hard to catch big ones. Kerr Scott also has striper now but I suspect alot of ppl are not abiding by size and creel limit regulations which will make keeping a good population an uphill battle.

Buy one of those NC Sportsman magazines you see at all of the gas stations and convenience stores. It's full of articles about fishing In NC. A lot of guides are mentioned in the articles and some advertise in a section in the back. I'm like Sgt.Kracka. Striper fishing would be a good trip for a 10 yo. There's several guides that guide on NC and SC lakes that will take you out and let you catch Stripers. Man those things pull and it would give a young boy a chance to catch a big fish. The only thing I'd do is wait until it cools down some. If you call around and talk to some of these guides they'll tell you the best time to come. Smith Mountain Lake in Virginia is a good lake for stripers. It will cost you some but I think it would be worth the experience.

sgt is right...Santee Cooper has some really good fishing...if you don't want your catch the locals will take them off your hands...they eat bones and all.

If you don't mind a 2 day trip, go striped bass fishing at Santee Cooper. The best guide I know of is Truman Lyon but not sure if he's still doing it or even if he's still alive.....I haven't been in about ten years.....he was old and kinda cranky even ten years ago.....if he's still alive and working as a guide, I imagine he's only gotten crabbier.... But he's a fantastic guide. And striper are fantastic to eat. I've done the entire round trip in 24 hours. 6 hours or so to get there....8 hours of fishing....this can be much shorter if you catch your limit early....4 hours to eat and rest....then the 6 hour drive home with a cooler full of fish

Take him trout fishing! Lots of the streams in Wilkes are stocked including Reddies River below the dam in North Wilkesboro.
